Meagher & Geer attorney, Tracy Vigness Kolb, will co-present at the 2016 Free Ethics IVN: Technology Competence: The New Ethical Mandate for North Dakota Lawyers and the Practice of Law.
The North Dakota Supreme Court has adopted the technology amendments to the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct that were proposed by the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 and approved by the ABA in August 2012. The rules changes to the North Dakota Rules of Professional Conduct are effective March 1, 2016. They are intended to ensure that lawyers’ use of technology complies with their ethical obligations to protect clients’ confidential information in this digital age.
The changes include technology competence in protecting client confidences and requiring that reasonable steps be taken to safeguard client confidences against unauthorized access and disclosure, not only within a law firm, but also outsourcing to third parties.
The presentation will include the assistance of technology expertise to help lawyers understand the technologies, the benefits and risks of their use, and what measures can be taken to protect information that is obtained, received, created, stored, and transmitted by lawyers.
