Greg Stephens
RetiredGreg Stephens was a full-time attorney with Meagher + Geer for 43 years — 29 years as a trial and litigation attorney and 14 years as the firm’s full-time Managing Partner.
After graduating from Law School in 1971, Greg served one year as a Federal Law Clerk to the Honorable Philip Neville, United States District Court, District of Minnesota. Greg started his legal career with Meagher + Geer on September 2, 1972. He was a trial attorney, litigator, arbitrator, mediator, and a no-fault insurance law expert. Greg became a Partner on July 1, 1977.
The Minnesota Supreme Court approved him as a neutral mediator and arbitrator. Greg had mediated and arbitrated cases involving business law, employment law, and personal injury.
Greg had been a frequent lecturer on behalf of Minnesota Continuing Legal Education and as a featured speaker at the Minnesota District Court Judge’s Annual Convention. On January 10, 2000, the Partners elected him to the firm’s Management Committee.
The Management Committee appointed Greg as the interim Managing Partner from October 17, 2001, to November 21, 2001. On December 1, 2001, he became the firm’s full-time Managing Partner and Chair of the firm’s Management Committee until June 30, 2015. The Management Committee then voted for Greg to remain with the firm as Of Counsel.
With 43 years of legal experience, Greg had both institutional knowledge and wisdom. As Managing Partner, he oversaw the firm’s day-to-day operations—making good use of his financial knowledge and personal relationship skills. With any eye on the future, he focused on providing a sound foundation for the firm.
Greg worked with lawyers to expand the firm’s national presence, as well as its influence within the legal community. In order to properly investigate, develop, present, and manage a vast variety of legal matters, Greg worked with lawyers and staff to maximize the firm’s expertise and resources.
Outside the office, Greg enjoys exercising, skiing, in-line skating, and playing golf.

- In 2016, Greg was an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law and taught a class titled The Legal Entrepreneur.
- Every year starting in 2014 and continuing, Greg mentors and coaches six new students at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
